One thought I heard in my early 20s that really hit me was that it's not actually harder to do ambitious really interesting things than much more mundane work. So since you're going to be working anyways, you might as well just set your sights really high.

The most interesting rationale I’ve heard for attempting ambitious things is, “Well, what else are you going to do with your life? Sit around?” This was an ambitious Singaporean guy I met recently. Interesting guy.
